Hurricane Beryl Strengthens to Category 5

Powerful Storm Barrels Toward Jamaica

Carriacou Hit Hard as Beryl Makes Landfall

Hurricane Beryl intensified into a Category 5 storm early Tuesday morning, becoming the first major hurricane of the 2023 season. The powerful hurricane is currently barreling west toward Jamaica, posing a significant threat to the island nation.

Beryl made landfall on the Caribbean island of Carriacou late Monday night, causing widespread damage and destruction. The storm brought strong winds, torrential rain, and storm surges, leaving thousands of homes and businesses without power.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Beryl is now moving west-northwest at 20 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph. The storm is expected to maintain its Category 5 status as it approaches Jamaica, bringing the potential for catastrophic damage.

Jamaica has issued a hurricane warning for its entire coastline, and residents are being urged to evacuate low-lying areas and take precautions against strong winds and flooding.
