Serigne Moustapha Sy Djamil was born in 1936 in Tivaouane, Senegal. He was the son of Serigne Babacar Sy, a prominent religious leader, and Sokhna Fatou Djamil. Djamil received a traditional Islamic education at a young age and memorized the Quran in its entirety by the age of 12.

After completing his religious studies in Senegal, Djamil traveled to Mauritania, where he studied with renowned scholars such as Sheikh Muhammad Taghi al-Simaysir. He also spent time in Sudan, where he studied with Sheikh al-Mahdi al-Mahjub.
